Overview

Dear Colleagues, As we begin the new year, we are very pleased to share with you the seventh issue of our newsletter for the UNSGM. In our last issue, we highlighted the importance of training activities for experts nominated to the UNSGM roster and shared an overview of the updates made in recent years to the training programme for experts. In this issue, we provide details on several training activities conducted in the second half of 2023, including a Basic Training Course organized in September 2023 with support from France, an advanced skill training course on the Transportation of Infectious Substances organized in September 2023 with support from Germany and Canada, and an advanced skill training course on Safe and Secure Approaches in Field Environments (SSAFE) organized with support from the United Nations Department of Safety and Security.

As always, we are extremely grateful for the support received from partners for these courses, and very pleased to share that this pace of activities will continue in 2024. More information on upcoming activities is available in the final section of the newsletter.

We hope you enjoy this newsletter and would be pleased to receive any feedback.

This briefing paper provides an overview of the Global Framework for Through-life Conventional Ammunition Management (GFA) and explores its relevance and implications for the Asia-Pacific region. Building upon discussions held during the Informal Regional Meeting in support of the GFA—organized by UNRCPD on 4–5 December 2024 in Kathmandu, Nepal—and based on desk research and a series of consultations, the paper identifies regional opportunities and challenges for GFA implementation. The paper begins with a brief history of the process leading to the elaboration and adoption of the GFA.
