UNSGM-Newsletter, Issue 6, Sep 2023

Overview

Dear Colleagues, We are very pleased to share with you the sixth issue of our newsletter. The focus of this issue is on two of the recently completed training activities for experts on the UNSGM roster – an advanced skill training course in Biological Crime Scene Management organized in February with support from INTERPOL and Canada, and another Basic Training Course organized in June with support from South Africa. We are also very pleased to report that additional training courses are planned for the remainder of 2023, and the calendar for 2024 is already starting to fill up. As always, you can find more information on upcoming activities in the final section of the newsletter.

As can be seen by all these activities, the increased investment of time, energy and resources is starting to pay off and UNODA sees increasing interest from partners in coordinating with UNODA on in-person training activities for the UNSGM. As such, we have also included a short update on the improvements we have been able to make to the training programme for nominated experts over the past few years.

We hope you enjoy this newsletter and please let us know if you have any feedback.

This briefing paper provides an overview of the Global Framework for Through-life Conventional Ammunition Management (GFA) and explores its relevance and implications for the Asia-Pacific region. Building upon discussions held during the Informal Regional Meeting in support of the GFA—organized by UNRCPD on 4–5 December 2024 in Kathmandu, Nepal—and based on desk research and a series of consultations, the paper identifies regional opportunities and challenges for GFA implementation. The paper begins with a brief history of the process leading to the elaboration and adoption of the GFA.
