Overview

The 2005 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) was held at the United Nations in New York from 2 to 27 May 2005. The President of the Conference was Mr. Sérgio de Queiroz Duarte, Ambassador-at-large of Brazil. This press kit includes information about the Review Conference, activities of the IAEA in relation to the NPT, a chronology of events relating to nuclear non-proliferation, the decisions and resolution adopted at the 1995 NPT Review and Extension Conference, the Final Document of the 2000 NPT Review Conference, the list of States that have ratified or acceded to the NPT as of 1 March 2005 and the text of the treaty.

The first half of the year has already seen several training courses, a regional outreach workshop, and many other activities to strengthen the UNSGM – more details on which can be found in this issue.

This briefing paper provides an overview of the Global Framework for Through-life Conventional Ammunition Management (GFA) and explores its relevance and implications for the Asia-Pacific region. Building upon discussions held during the Informal Regional Meeting in support of the GFA—organized by UNRCPD on 4–5 December 2024 in Kathmandu, Nepal—and based on desk research and a series of consultations, the paper identifies regional opportunities and challenges for GFA implementation. The paper begins with a brief history of the process leading to the elaboration and adoption of the GFA.
